چکیده
Abstract Purpose Tyro is a deep hypersaline anoxic basin (DHAB) located at the seafloor of Eastern Mediterranean sea. hosts stratified eukaryotic microbiome moving from seawater to brine, but no reports are available on its prokaryotic community. We provide first snapshot bacterial community structure in seawater-brine interface, and overlaying seawater. Methods In this study, we combined use molecular analyses, i.e., DNA fingerprinting 16S rRNA pyrosequencing for description taxonomy. PiCRUST2 was used infer information prokaryotes functional diversity. A culture-dependent approach applied enrich bacteria interest marine biotechnology. Results Bacterial communities sharply clustered agreement with abrupt increase salinity values. Moreover, specific taxonomic groups inhabited interface compared their identification revealed converging taxonomy other DHABs Functional traits inferred prokaryote upper indicated metabolic pathways synthesis osmoprotectants, likely involved adaptation steep increasing salinity. Metabolic related methane methylated compounds hydrocarbon degradation were also Tyro. The overall capability metabolism confirmed by isolation hydrocarbonoclastic sediments. Conclusions Our results suggest that adapted polyextreme condition typical potential features could be further explored characterization network connecting brine through chemocline. reservoir culturable microbes endowed functionalities biotechnological applications like bioremediation.

Low Bacterial Diversity and High Labile Organic Matter Concentrations in the Sediments of the Medee Deep-Sea Hypersaline Anoxic Basin
Studies in the center and margin of the Medee Basin, a Mediterranean deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basin, and at a reference site during Penelope cruise (2007), revealed the existence of a 7 m-thick halocline, with high salinity (328 psu), and high sedimentary organic carbon and biopolymer concentrations. The 194 16S rRNA sequences retrieved were grouped into 118 unique phylotypes. Pseudomonas ge...
متن کاملDiversity of Bacillus-like organisms isolated from deep-sea hypersaline anoxic sediments
BACKGROUND The deep-sea, hypersaline anoxic brine lakes in the Mediterranean are among the most extreme environments on earth, and in one of them, the MgCl2-rich Discovery basin, the presence of active microbes is equivocal. However, thriving microbial communities have been detected especially in the chemocline between deep seawater and three NaCl-rich brine lakes, l'Atalante, Bannock and Urani...
متن کاملMicrobial communities in the chemocline of a hypersaline deep-sea basin (Urania basin, Mediterranean Sea).
The Urania basin is a hypersaline sulfidic brine lake at the bottom of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Since this basin is located at a depth of approximately 3,500 m below the sea surface, it receives only a small amount of phytoplankton organic carbon. In the present study, the bacterial assemblages at the interface between the hypersaline brine and the overlaying seawater were investigated. T...
متن کاملBacterial community diversity of the deep-sea octocoral Paramuricea placomus
Compared to tropical corals, much less is known about deep-sea coral biology and ecology. Although the microbial communities of some deep-sea corals have been described, this is the first study to characterize the bacterial community associated with the deep-sea octocoral, Paramuricea placomus. Samples from five colonies of P. placomus were collected from Baltimore Canyon (379-382 m depth) in t...
متن کاملEnvironmental selection of protistan plankton communities in hypersaline anoxic deep-sea basins, Eastern Mediterranean Sea
High salt concentrations, absence of light, anoxia, and high hydrostatic pressure make deep hypersaline anoxic basins (DHABs) in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea one of the most polyextreme habitats on Earth. Taking advantage of the unique chemical characteristics of these basins, we tested the effect of environmental selection and geographic distance on the structure of protistan communities. Ter...
